Andrea Carlson biography

Andrea Carlson is a Grand Portage Ojibwe painter based in Chicago, Illinois. Carlson earned a BA from the University of Minnesota in 2003 and an MFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2005. Carlson has had several exhibitions throughout her career including, New Skins (2007), Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN, SAKAHAN (2013) National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, ON, and Hearts of Our People (2019), Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis, MN. Carlson cites entangled cultural narratives and institutional authority relating to objects based on the merit of possession and display. Her work has been acquired by institutions such as the British Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the National Gallery of Canada. Carlson was a 2008 McKnight Fellow and a 2017 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors grant recipient.
