Dominique Rey BIOGRAPHY

Dominique Rey is a French-Canadian visual artist working in photography, film, and sculpture. Performance and the body are central to her practice, and she uses fragmentation to explore the self within contemporary experiences of disorientation and dislocation. Her ongoing project MOTHERGROUND examines the transformations of early motherhood, the relentless balance at stake, and the oscillation between emotional extremes, from agony to ecstasy.

Her work has been exhibited across Europe, the United States, and Canada, including at the National Gallery of Canada, Remai Modern, the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto, Plug In ICA, Galerie de l’UQAM, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery, among others. She has received numerous awards and grants, including support from the Canada Council for the Arts, Manitoba Arts Council, Winnipeg Arts Council, and was longlisted for the Sobey Art Award in 2011. In 2016, Rey received the Canada Council for the Arts International Artist Residency at La Cité internationale des arts in Paris. Her work is held in major public and corporate collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, Remai Modern, Winnipeg Art Gallery, among others.

Rey holds MFAs from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College and the Transart Institute in Berlin. She is a professor at the School of Art, University of Manitoba, located on Treaty 1 Territory and the Homeland of the Red River Métis.
